Just Like You
Who tf is she talking to?
SpotifyThis song is here because the meaning confuses me, but not in a bad way, and that keeps me listening. I’ve read the lyrics and listened dozens of times, but I can’t figure out who Marlo. is talking to. It could be a song about self-image. The album art shows an older woman fixing a child’s hair; could it be a relative who passed away? The album art could also imply she’s talking to her younger self. I’m not here to figure it out; I’m just here to talk about it and what it means to me.
About the Artist
I can’t find much about Marlo., but it seems like she wrote her own Spotify artist description which is helpful. I listened to her whole catalogue of music, and the jazz influence she mentions is heavy in earlier work. However, the description of her YouTube channel states that her new sound is closer to Tame Impala and the Gorillaz, which is very much present in this track, and I am so excited to hear what she puts out next.
Marlo. shares a lot about her music process on her Instagram which I encourage you to take a look at; there is even a sneak peek at her next song! Most information about her can be found there; I’ll let you look for yourself.
Lyricism
This is where I struggle, and it’s absolutely a me problem. I have an engineering and problem-solving brain, so I like to find solutions and absolute truths, which causes a lot of friction when I listen to songs like Just Like You. The written meaning is lost on me but the 3 theories I mentioned above could all be true for anybody to relate to. The strongest feeling I relate to is an introspective talk to myself. I can’t dye my hair or miss my favorite blonde, I’m bald and don’t really like blondes, but from my perspective, looking back on a time when you were lost, and being able to express yourself in the moment is really powerful. Especially when times are uncertain and maybe you happen to be standing on the edge of a bridge, hoping you don’t fall, you can look back and see how far you came to even get to the bridge.
I don’t find it as easy to relate introspectively after the first verse.
Hope I’m just like you
Told I’m just like you
Really reads like a mother or grandmother who has passed away; I can just hear “You look just like her” when I see the album art. The entire second verse really reads like an homage to a great person in her life. To be completely honest, I’m lucky to not have a good relation point here. I can imagine if certain people in my life passed, I’d feel exactly like this about them, I just can’t yet.
However you take this song I think it is lyrically beautiful, and anybody would love to hear these words from somebody in their life, and maybe some of us need to tell them to ourselves.
Musicality
The instrumentals in this track are what grabbed me initially, which is maybe why I don’t quite understand the written meaning. It really takes me on a journey. The floating piano in the intro takes me to a dreamscape up in the clouds, the heavy drum tone and cutting piano bassline snap me right out of it with the snare sending me into a freefall. The sudden shift in tone really supports the loss of a loved one argument. A joyful child-like intro abruptly cut by the craziest snare reads to me as a shift in life or loss of innocence, which could maybe support 2 of the arguments, but it’s not too important.
But then, Marlo.’s beautifully harmonized vocals come and lift me right back up to the clouds, floating above the chaos and crash of the drums and guitar. It’s almost like there’s an insanely solid wall of sound, but the snare still completely cuts through; I very much enjoy it.
In the verses we lose the dainty piano line and guitar, just vocals, drums, and piano bassline. At the same time, the vocals sound decently distorted and screamy, in stark contrast to the harmonization in the intro. They sound so distant it’s like I hit the ground, near the drums and piano, with the vocalist above me. This song really tosses me around.
When the lines I quoted above hit, a guitar comes in and sounds like it’s miles away. The bend almost sounds like a Doppler effect, like something flying by super quickly, maybe it’s life, maybe it’s just me. We also get back to a soft vocal and swap our piano bassline for an electric. So many unique sounds in this track, and they keep me interested.
Leading into the bridge, or maybe it’s a drop, the first full “Just Like You” opens back up with beautiful harmonies and the guitar flying by, but this time I feel like I’m flying by super quickly.
All to say I really love the instrumentals on this track. Beautiful production and arrangement of melodies. If this is the sound Marlo. is going for in upcoming music, there’s nothing I’m more excited for.
Personal Meaning
It’s difficult for me here as previously stated. I think a lot of the lyrics describe how I want my future self to look back at current me.
See my own face in your picture I know that I’m God
I really hope that one day I can look back at myself and feel like I’m God. Maybe not that narcissistic but you know what I mean. Maybe it’s because I feel I’m at a low point; it’s not easy to look at my past self and be completely appreciative. But I do hope that the things I’m doing now are setting myself up to be better, and that soon I can look back and see this love in every good view in the world.
I’d be interested to hear how you relate to this song for any reason. I may revisit this one after I find a more clear reason to resonate with the lyrics, but for now, it’s mostly the music that grabs me.

I wanted to share another one of Marlo.’s songs that I think is really worth a listen, if you don’t want to go through her catalogue. I don’t want to do a whole article about this one because it’s extremely specific, but like the trees for the woods you know I’m a sucker for directness. Judging by the year, Marlo. was likely a child when this was written, but the emotion and lyricism in the song are too good to pass up on at least a one-time listen.
